The Fish
This is a fish. It was sculpted by Constantin Brancusi. When I first saw it in a gallery I immediately knew what it was. Without fins, without scales and without eyes, it is clearly a fish.
That's how I approach writing. I strip things down to their core and then sculpt them so that people immediately know what they're looking at.
The Iceberg
Hemingway, as ever, said it best. He had a theory that writing is like an iceberg. What you see on top is just a tiny fraction of what is there. The mass is beneath the surface.
To produce beautiful writing you need a depth of knowledge, otherwise it's farce or mimicry.
